- - 'Boston Blue' Showrunners Break Down That Shocking Midseason Finale Death (Exclusive)

Actions have consequences on TV as in real life. And there’s a doozy of collateral damage in the Season 1 midseason finale on Boston Blueas a result of Mae’s (Gloria Reuben) firing of ADA Beekman, who was breaking the law: The man who was in prison for the murder of Mae’s husband Ben Silver, Ronan Flaherty, was tried by that ADA, and as a result, he was released due to prosecutorial misconduct. He wasn’t the only one to be set free, but he’s the one that matters most to the Silver family.

In fact, it’s such a bone of contention with Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner) that he can’t leave the matter alone and gets into serious trouble, almost being kicked out of the Boston police force for getting into a fight with Flaherty.

His grandfather Rev. Peters (Ernie Hudson) counsels Jonah afterwards, and it appears that it takes, but in the end, Jonah winds up in a dark alley with Flaherty dead on the ground.

“When you’re talking to your child, or in this case your grandchild, and you’re saying one thing, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hearing exactly what you mean to say,” co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier tells Parade. “So, does Jonah talk to the Rev? Is there an understanding? Does it feel in that moment like Jonah has calmed down? Absolutely. But young men in their 20s are often known to hear what they want to hear, behave the way that they want to behave, and go off and do things that older men might not agree with.”

Whether or not Jonah was responsible for Flaherty’s death and if it was justified if he did do it, won’t be revealed until Boston Blue returns from the winter break on Feb 29, but Jonah's anger and impulsively acting on it will have other consequences as well.

Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) was offered a permanent Boston PD badge by Sarah (Maggie Lawson), but he didn’t jump at the chance. Taking it would mean he would have to retire from the NYPD and that’s a huge decision for a Reagan, but with what happened with Jonah, Danny may feel he has to say yes.

“It’s laid out throughout the episode that you can’t run lead on a case if you’re a consultant,” Sonnier points out. “There are certain things that you can’t access because you’re a consultant here from the NYPD, so if you ever want to run lead on the case, you’d have to take that badge that was offered. So, in order to run lead in said investigation, if he is going to step up for this family that’s embraced him and Sean [Mika Amonsen], he’s going to need to be able to actually run lead on this case. He’s going to need access in a way that he doesn’t have as an NYPD detective. He’s going to need that badge.”

Those are the consequences for Danny. But does Mae have any second thoughts?

“I think Mae certainly is unhappy with the outcome, but I don’t think she has any regrets about doing what she did,” co-showrunner Brandon Margolis tells Parade. “It all goes back to somebody in her office breaking the law and being a criminal. Turning a blind eye to that is something that’s just so against her character that she wouldn’t have been able to. In terms of the consequences, she may have some regrets about the things that it’s going to lead her children to do, but I think at her core, Mae would do it all over again because that’s just who she is. No one gets a free pass when they’re blatantly breaking the law like that.”

During our chat with the Brandons, Parade also spoke to them about the change in Danny’s personality since moving to Boston, Danny taking very seriously the decision to give up his NYPD badge, and upcoming romances on the show.

So, when did Danny become the sensible one? He’s the hot-headed one that goes off halfcocked and now he’s the one who’s reigning in Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green)?Brandon S: Part of what is so exciting for us about this story, about this show, about this opportunity to live in the Blue Bloods universe is to get to explore new sides of Danny Reagan that we have not yet seen. He’s in this new place, and it is interesting that now he is integrating into the Silver family as his newfound family. But in this particular instance, because he’s on the outside of it, it does give Danny the opportunity to be the sensible one. To be the one that has to take a step back and say, “This is how we’re going to have to do things, the right way, the appropriate way.” He has to lead with his head and not his emotions like we’ve seen him do so often in the past.Brandon M: And for us, the shift from New York to Boston has always been the question, right? How would Danny Reagan leave New York? And for us, those moments were always about family. In the pilot, leaving at all was because Sean was nearly killed, and sticking around was because Sean could benefit from another Reagan being on the force. And now it’s his found family that needs him, and so that was how we looked at the process, the evolution of the shield to the badge over the course of the season would require emotional choices like that.

Brandon S: I will also say that there are police procedural things that will need to be checked, boxes that need to be checked, bureaucracies that need to be fulfilled, your red tape in that sort of transfer, that we start to get into the procedure of it all in 1-10. And we spend some time in the back half of our season dealing with, how do you actually go from being an NYPD detective to a detective in the Boston PD? Because you can do it temporarily, but in order to do it for real, there’s a process that Danny Reagan’s going to have to go through.

It’s huge if he retires from the NYPD.Brandon S: That’s a very big deal, that’s correct.

The one thing that had me iffy in this episode was that we like Danny and Maria (Marisa Ramirez) together. So when Lena started teasing him that if they were together, she would put the pillow over his head and smother him, that makes me think that you are trying to lay in something there for the future. It makes me nervous!Brandon M: All I can say is don’t be nervous. The story with Baez is not over, we will see Maria again in the back half of the season. And as you’ll recall, Danny was offered some company from an exotic dancer and he said he was spoken for and he was not lying to her. So, the relationship is continuing, but there will be more turns in the Danny-Baez story in the back half of the season.

In addition to Maria, will there be anybody else in the back half of the season coming from New York? Brandon M: The answer is yes, we will see more Reagans in the back half of the season, and we’ll also expand the Silver family a little. There are new family members to meet on all sides of this.

Xochitl Gomez is a new add to the cast as Sean’s love interest. It wasn’t an easy decision for Sean to make, so talk about the appeal of her to him that he would go against what his father had initially told him.Brandon M: For us, an interesting element of Sean’s character was his relationships. In Blue Bloods, he wasn’t the luckiest in love growing up, so we found that he would be the type of guy who if he had a connection with somebody on a real level, someone who was into the same nerdy stuff he was, and there was a chemistry there, it would be really hard for him to walk away from that or to not respond to somebody meeting him halfway with who he is.So, obvious,ly the height of that drama is learning, ‘oh, my gosh, she has a past, a criminal past that my father and the people I associate with are not going to approve of.’ So that push-pull between literally how your heart feels and what your head’s telling you is something that’s fun for us to explore, and such great young love stories are fraught with that. Xochitl’s obviously just a phenomenal talent, and we were so lucky she agreed to do it and agreed to come back, and to come back yet again in the back half of the season, so she’s just a joy to write for and to have around. She’s awesome.

It looked like Lena was starting a romance with her fellow cop, but…Brandon S: Oh, he comes back, don’t worry. Don’t worry, Rodgers (Ryan Broussard) is around. We’ve got some romances. There’s potential romance on the table for Mae.Brandon M: Let’s not forget Sarah and Seth (Mike Vogel) have moved in together and their relationship will continue to evolve, so there’s love for everybody in the back half of the season.

Boston Blue will return with new episodes on Friday, Feb. 27 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
