Rob Reiner's kids Jake and Romy are "surrounded with support" after their parents were killed and brother Nick was charged with murder

"They are being incredibly strong," a source tells PEOPLE of Jake and Romy

The siblings spoke out about the "horrific and devastating loss of our parents" in a statement

Rob and Michele Reiner's children, Jake and Romy, are remaining "incredibly strong" as they navigate an unthinkable family tragedy, a source tells PEOPLE.

"It has of course been a huge shock to the system. This nightmare came out of nowhere for them, but they've been surrounded with support since the second they found out," says the source.

On Sunday, Dec. 14, Romy discovered her dad's dead body inside his Los Angeles home. Mom Michele was later also found dead, the couple both killed with multiple sharp force injuries in their bedroom hours before. Rob and Michele were 78 and 70, respectively, at the time of their deaths.

Their son Nick, 32, was arrested Sunday night, and has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. After a brief appearance in court Wednesday, Dec. 17, Nick's arraignment will continue Jan. 7.

The source notes that Rob and Michele are "beloved" in Hollywood, leaving behind a large inner circle to support Jake, 34, and Romy, 28, in the wake of their parents' deaths. Rob also had daughter Tracy, 61, from his first marriage to late actor-director Penny Marshall

"Jake and Romy will never be alone as they try to face this," says the source.

In a statement shared on Dec. 17, Jake and Romy spoke out about the "horrific and devastating loss of our parents."

"Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day," the siblings said. "The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."

"We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life," they added.

"We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave."

Nick, who'd been in and out of rehab over 18 times by the age of 22, co-wrote a movie loosely based on his addiction experience that dad Rob directed, 2015's Being Charlie.

In a September interview with NPR, Rob mentioned that Nick was "great" and "hasn't been doing drugs for over six years." The late star added of his son, "He's in a really good place."

Nick joined the family on the red carpet of Rob's Spinal Tap II: The End Continues premiere in Los Angeles on Sept. 9.

A separate source close to the family told PEOPLE the Reiners never suspected Nick would become violent: "I don’t think anyone could have ever seen anything like this coming."
