Spoiler alert! We're discussing the opening scene of the new movie “Wuthering Heights” (in theaters now).
It’s hard to look away from Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights.”
In her provocative new spin on Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel, the Oscar-winning filmmaker announces from the get-go that this isn’t your grandmother’s windswept Gothic romance.
In a major change from the book, the period drama opens at a debauched public hanging, where a young Catherine Earnshaw (Charlotte Mellington) looks on as a man dangles from a noose. The callous crowd begins to laugh and point as they notice the dying man has an erection – a relatively common physiological response – and pretty soon, Cathy joins them in their snickering.
The hanging quickly devolves into an all-out bacchanal, as onlookers drink, dance and kiss in the square surrounding the flailing corpse.

“With the first moments of a film, you need to set the tone and say what it is,” Fennell explains. “This is a deeply felt romance. But I also wanted people to understand that it would be surprising and darkly funny and perhaps stranger than they would expect.”
Back in 18th-century England when the movie is set, public executions were widely treated as a macabre form of entertainment. Cathy wrestles with shame over her lascivious curiosity, but her lust only grows as an adult (played by Margot Robbie) when she reunites with childhood friend Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi).

Drive us mad with your "Wuthering Heights" fashion looks, Margot and Jacob ... The stars of the upcoming Emerald Fennell adaptation of Emily Brontë's 1847 gothic novel have fans swooning over red carpet looks and press tour interactions. Margot Robbie, who plays Catherine Earnshaw, and Jacob Elordi, who portrays Heathcliff, stepped out in Los Angeles this week to promote the film, out in theaters on Feb. 13, 2026.
“It was important to acknowledge early on that arousal and danger are kind of the same thing – that is what the Gothic is,” Fennell says. “And it was important that the first thing we see is Cathy, this young girl, seemingly frightened but then actually delighted. It tells us so much about who she is, but so much about Brontë, too.
“We have this idea that the world of period dramas was fragrant and beautiful and pastel and lovely,” Fennell adds. “It wasn't at all. It was a dangerous place to live in, so it was crucial for me to show that right at the beginning.”
